Curled Edges and Corners:
Tension in the foundation strings that was not adjusted sufficiently throughout the rug when being woven will cause the edges to curl. Even rugs that are not tightly woven can curl, usually due to the rug coming into contact with water; this causes the wool to shrink in an uneven way.
"Blocking and Sizing" is a process where we stretch and pin the rug while wet to a holed platform, then we turbo dry the rug by blowing air through the holes. This process insures the rug fibers are drying evenly.
Fringes \ End Repair:
A fringe is actually an individual foundation strand. Each tassel on the end of the rug actually runs all the way to the other end appearing as another tassel, most rugs have white fringe tassels made of cotton; others have silk or wool tassels.
It is important to fix rug fringes that are damaged soon. A fringe is usually the first part in the rug to be damaged as it is exposed. If damaged, the fringe being the foundation fibers of the rug, like a Skeleton can create a situation where the pile is loose and unwind. Repairing damaged fringes includes securing the rug end\fringe\tassel, then attaching a new end\fringe\tassel to the original fringe\tassel base.
Selvage and Binding, Side Repair:
Binding (side cords) is what holds the sides of the rug in place and the knots together; it’s the end point of the weave. The binding therefore, both holds the rug and its shape and prevents the unraveling of the knots. When the binding becomes loose, it affects the shape and in time knots will unravel.
Low Pile:
Low Pile on the rug is a situation developed over time where the foundation of the rug becomes exposed, although law pile creates aged look and shows character, if the area which the rug is worn is large, it can create a massive damage. The process of low pile repair includes un-knotted and re-knotted of the rug using new wool.
Small tears:
Holes and tears in the rug can be caused by water rot, excessive traffic, wear of old age and furniture friction. If left un-treated, the foundation fibers fracture. We strengthen the damaged area by using Embroidery stitching; if the damage is too great, re-weaving or patching will be needed.
Dyeing:
Discoloring, worn areas etc. can be cosmetically treated by using permanent textile dye.
